English » Lebanese daily: People of Lebanon “silent victims” of Hezbollah-led Ban on Anne Frank

In an article in the Lebanese daily L'Orient Le Jour, journalist Ziyad Makoul strongly denounced the obscurantist censorship of the Diary instigated by Hezbollah and said "the Lebanese people in their entirety are the silent victims of this collective rape." Excerpts from the article:

An abridged version of the Diary of Anne Frank was removed from a textbook in a private school in Beirut following a campaign by Hezbollah, who saw in this book that has sold more than 25 million copies worldwide and has been translated into over fifty languages an apology for... Zionism! To talk about the inestimable intrinsic value of this monument of world literature, of this historic, universal document of the worst that man can do, regardless of skin color, religion or country of origin, would be futile, just as it would be vain and desperate to denounce this collective rape that has as its silent victim the people of Lebanon as a whole, their nature, their culture and their standing in the world.

Beyond the feeling of absolute indignation aroused in the vast majority of the Lebanese by this episode lies the frightening observation that this country is on an inevitable slide, an inexorable march back to a medieval precipice, a return to an unimaginable socio-cultural and moral Stone Age. Worse, beyond this turbaned Inquisition, is the obvious evidence that in about half of the territories of Lebanon, people can no longer coexist or even mingle together.

Worse still is the pretext advanced by [the television station of Hezbollah] Al-Manar to justify this act. Not that the diary of the fifteen-year-old girl who died in the concentration camp of Bergen-Belsen focuses on the persecution of Jews... But this is what Al-Manar says: "What is more dangerous is the dramatic and theatrical way the diary has been narrated; it is emotionally charged." Here is a Himalaya of stupidity that Hezbollah propaganda had not yet used: this little girl victim who symbolizes the Holocaust is a criminal. Her crime? Being swollen, soaked, drunk with emotion.
